Notes on the Chemistry of PTSD
Notes on the Chemistry of PTSD grew out of my recent research in the hormones oxytocin, cortisol, adrenaline, and norepinephrine, which is thought to contribute to stress and anger. Coincidentally the hormones of oxytocin and vasopressin are also thought to invoke the emotions of love, empathy and bonding. This artist book represents the tensions of feeling and knowing. Chemical structures and their noted properties are juxtaposed with abstract washes of ink to contrast the swirling confusions and anxieties that are common in PTSD. I overlap organic chemistry and abstract washes along with intertwining thin strands of string to connect points and connections while letting the imagery of science and symbolism bleed through. The book will unfold like a map, exposing sections at a time to lead the viewer to make discoveries.
